With the fall of the housing market during the late 2000s recession, log prices plummeted, and logging became much less profitable. Owner of Tough Go Logging, James Stupack runs a two-sided logging operation out of Kalispell, MT, providing good jobs to a dozen good men. His crews consisted of his own sons, brother-in-law, nephews, and long-time friends. In a down economy, James faced a very tough predicament: adapt his company to the current harsh timber industry, or drastically cut his employees hours in order to keep the business afloat.

The solution was firewood. He set up his crew with saws and a hydraulic splitter to start selling wood by the cord to supplement the logging business.

On 8/13/2010, our truck scales were put into place, and from then on, our firewood has been sold by the pound. Though we’ve grown exponentially over the years, we still retain the core values we had when Wild Montana Wood was dreamt up: Honesty, Hard Work, Integrity, Family, and the preservation of our beautiful home of Montana.

We are open year-round, but our log yard is a much different place in our slow summer months than it is in the bustling fall-winter months. We are working to improve the efficiency of our operation, and on improving our ability to keep up with demand in the busy season.
